Roaccutane is a medication containing isotretinoin which is used for the treatment of severe cystic acne which hasn't responded to other treatments such as benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics.
It works by targeting sebaceous glands in the skin and reducing the production of sebum, an oily substance which is usually responsible for maintaining the moisture of the skin but is over-produced in acne sufferers.
However, as a consequence of this mode of action, many patients who take Roaccutane also suffer from a variety of adverse dry skin effects including redness and flaking on the face.
In Medipharm, our pharmacists recommend either La Roche Posay Effaclar H or Avene Clean-Ac to compensate for this dryness and to rehydrate the skin. The lips are also especially prone to severe dryness and chapping in Roaccutane users- we recommend La Roche Posay Ceralip or Avene Cold Cream Lip Cream to soothe and repair.
